Operations

Mwalimu MMC Colliery, Hendrina.

The Mwalimu MMC Colliery is situated on Portions 8 and 11 of Vaalbank 177 IS, approximately 2 km east of Hendrina on the N11 and R38, within the Witbank Coalfield. Hendrina, Arnot and Komati power stations are all within 60 km.
The operation holds granted Mining Right MP 10267 MR and a granted Water Use Licence over 378 hectares. The relevant land is being purchased outright by Mwalimu.

Mining method

The open-cast operation uses a truck-and-shovel, roll-over mining method at an average depth of 40 metres and a modelled strip ratio of 5.8. A bord-and-pillar underground horizon is defined behind the open pits.

Technical basis

The colliery was independently modelled by CEM Mining (Pty) Ltd in October 2025. Forty-five boreholes were drilled within the colliery area. CEM assessed their density, distribution and data quality as sufficient for tonnage and quality estimation. Reporting is under the SAMREC Code (2016).
